Family Discipleship For The Attributes of God

God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend. Job 37:5

Our heart behind providing family worship and devotion content each week is that it would be utilized to create discipleship moments within homes so that adults and children alike can behold, obey, and be transformed by the gospel.

As you read through this content and incorporate these discipleship moments into your regular rhythms as a family, we would encourage you to listen to the previous sermons in this campaign (“The Uniqueness of God” and “The Infinity of God”), as well as look at the family worship and devotions for “The Uniqueness of God.” We would also encourage you that part of your own beholding, obeying, and being transformed by the gospel is to participate in the discipleship opportunities available for adults— reading along in None Like Him each week and participating in a Doxa Community are opportunities that will not only benefit your personal discipleship but will also benefit your family as they will further equip you to lead these conversations.

As we have stated before, these family worship guides are intended to help create conversations within the home and are not exhaustive. You know your child, what is appropriate and what they can handle, so certainly use your discretion as you read through and utilize this guide!

Family Devotion & Worship Part One

Question

What does it mean that God is incomprehensible?

Answer

Incomprehensible is a big word that simply means we cannot comprehend, or understand, something (in this case, God). There is no way that we as humans can ever fully understand God.

Scripture

God thunders wondrously with his voice; He does great things that we cannot comprehend.

Job 37:5

Prayer

God, there is none like you, and we will never be able to fully comprehend you. Thank you that your ways are wondrous and that you allow us the Scriptures to know you more.

Family Devotion & Worship Part Two

Question

If we can’t comprehend God, how are we supposed to know Him?

Answer

If you think back to the first week of this campaign, you will remember that God is unique and that he chooses to reveal Himself in the Scriptures. Because he has provided us with the Scriptures, he allows us to know Him enough for salvation and for sanctification (a process of becoming more like Jesus by turning from our sin). Until the day we die and as long as we are reading Scripture, there will always be something new that God allows us to learn about him.  Just like humans need food to survive, Christians need the Bible to survive, because God designed it to allow us to know Him.

Scripture

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk  without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live.

Isaiah 55:1–3

Prayer

God, thank you for giving us Your Word. Your Word helps us to know there is none like You, and it helps us to know You. Thank you for giving us all that we need. Amen!

Family Devotion & Worship Part Three

Question

Why is God being incomprehensible important?

Answer

Like we talked about with the previous question, we can know God by having faith that he allows us to know him by reading the Scriptures he has given us. Even though we can’t fully know God, he can and does fully know us. When we have faith and work to know him through Scripture, we trust him and love him more, which helps us to trust and love other people around us more.

Scripture

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12

Prayer

God, thank you for giving us the Scriptures and allowing us to know you through them. Help me to have faith that you allow me to know through Scripture. As I learn to know you through Scripture, help me trust and love you more, and transform my heart so that I can love those around me more, too. Thank you that even though we can’t fully understand you, you fully know and understand us. Amen!
