Family Worship & Devotion Week Nine

In this final week of our campaign through the attributes of God, we have the opportunity to look at God’s sovereignty— his absolute rule and reign over all. In this final attribute, we are reminded to hold our desire for understanding loosely. Proverbs 3:5 paints the picture for us: “Trust the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” The scope of whatever knowledge we can obtain will never be complete, because even an understanding of God’s sovereignty does not guarantee, even slightly, understanding of all his purposes.

In short, the opportunity to learn about these attributes of God actually give us the opportunity to know God himself. And in knowing, we can rest, trusting that even the uncertainty, in that which remains unknown, he is a good father that wants the best for his children, and that he is working all things according to his purposes for his glory and for our good (Romans 8:28).

The sovereignty of God means that he has absolute power and rules over everything. Because Jesus rules over everything, he knows everything. This attribute is something we will never fully understand, but because we know God has absolute power and that he cares for us, we can trust him. Trusting God means that we are able to give him every part of our life, without any delay. This is the example we see when we read the story of Jesus calling the disciples to follow him!

Question

What does it mean that God is sovereign?

Answer

God’s sovereignty means that he rules and reigns over all things. 1 Chronicles tells us that he has greatness, power, glory, victory and majesty. Because he is all of these things, and because he has all power, we can trust him. Trusting God means that we give him every part of our life, without hesitation. His sovereignty means that he already has control over everything in our life, but our trusting him means that we are willing to give him that control. In Mark 1, we read that Jesus called his disciples to follow him and they immediately did as they were asked. This is a great example of trusting Jesus with everything in our life, immediately! We can trust God in his sovereignty because he has all the power, using it to bring himself praise but also using it for our good.

Scripture

1 Chronicles 29:10-13

Mark 1:16-20

Prayer

God, thank you that we are able to trust you because you have full reign over everything. Help us to trust you more, and to willingly give everything in our life to you. Thank you that even though we don’t always understand why things are happening, we know that you do and that you are in control. Amen.
