A Good Inheritance

 

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord
the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one's youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.”
-Psalm 127:3-5

If you’ve ever flown, then you know how little is within your control while flying. During those hours in the air, you rely on the flight attendants to provide you with everything from safety instructions to something to drink. They make sure that you are taken care of and arrive safely at your destination. The flight attendant is your steward: the person who oversees your trip and wellbeing as a passenger. 

As a parent, you are responsible for the stewardship of your children. In Psalm 127:3, children are called “a heritage from the Lord.” The word heritage also means inheritance, something that is gifted or given. This means that children are given to us from the Lord for a period of time and our job as parents is ultimately to point them back to the Lord. The parenting journey is full of highs and lows, so much joy alongside trying days. The ride can be bumpy, and things may not go as planned. 

The role of steward requires you to remain faithful to your children through every season. It’s not about raising morally superior human beings, but children who understand their sin and need for a savior in Jesus Christ. It’s about raising children who understand that their identity is rooted in Christ. You will take care of them, oversee their wellbeing, and provide them with the discipleship to know who Christ is and what He has done for them.

As a local church, we desire to come alongside you as you steward the lives of your children. One way we do this is through Child Dedication. We believe that Child Dedication is a covenant between God and His church and His church and parents to equip and disciple children.
