God Our Rescuer

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

At Doxa, we believe that worship should extend beyond Sunday morning. The songs and hymns we sing are carefully curated to compliment our sermon series and help us behold, obey, and be transformed by the Gospel. For the coming months, we have asked our Core Team to share how the songs we sing on Sunday help us behold the character of God. This first post is written by one of our worship leaders, Jeff, and focuses on the selfless and relentless nature of God.

GOD OUR RESCUER

Have you ever been in need of rescue? If not, I’m sure you’ve seen an ambulance race past you on its way to rescue someone else. Rescuers rush to the scene of the accident. They don’t hesitate. They don’t wait for the injured, hurting person to come to them. They go into the danger zone or the battlefield to bring help and healing to the hurting and the broken. That’s what rescue is. It’s the intentional action of removing someone from confinement, captivity, or danger. Rescue is selfless and risky but absolutely necessary.

God is the ultimate rescuer. He selflessly and relentlessly chases after the hurting, the broken, the dying. God doesn’t wait passively for us to come to Him. He doesn’t sit back on His throne with His fingers crossed, hoping one day we’ll come to Him for help. He actively pursues us. He sent His only Son for us, to forcibly remove us from the captivity of sin by offering up His life on the cross for our sake. Our righteous acts are like filthy rags and still He sought us. We were sinners, living as His enemy, and still His mercy bought us. From our shame and our chains, His grace alone frees us and the truth of His Gospel will lead us. God is our rescuer. He is the redeemer of the world, endlessly and relentlessly pursuing us.
